9-Day Mara to the Swahili Coast

9 Days

Arrive in Africa’s incredible natural wonder, the Masai Mara, where thousands of wildebeest follow the rains over the acacia-studded, plains and large predators follow close behind. Come face to face with Kenya’s colourful tribe – the Maasai –and learn first-hand about their ancient pastoral customs and local knowledge. Soak up the equatorial sunshine and relax, rejuvenate and unwind on the undiscovered, white-sand of Kenya’s stunning South Coast.

You'll be collected from the airport (or hotel).

Accommodation before the tour starts can be arranged for an extra cost.

Saruni Mara Camp and its sister tented camp, Saruni Wild, lie in the Mara North Conservancy. The sanctuary is a partnership between conservationists, investors and 800-plus Masai landowners, for whom this is the first time they have received income from wildlife. The camps lie in the path of the Great Migration (July to November) and the less well-known Loita Hills migration (December to May), which sees thousands of wildebeest arriving at the conservancy. Animals cover the landscape, so drives across the savanna are hugely rewarding. Take night drives through the Mara Conservancy, investigate the surrounding forest and valleys on foot, with a guide, to see the smaller creatures and some of the Masai Mara's 550-plus bird species. If you're travelling with your children, the Masai-run Warriors Academy offers special courses in bush skills and animal tracking. Hike up Kilelioni, the highest peak in the Mara–Serengeti ecosystem and visit the local Masai market, held every Thursday.

Main Destination: Masai Mara National Reserve

Accommodation: Saruni Mara Camp

Meals & Drinks: All meals included

All drinks (Premium wines & liquors might be excluded)

Finishing off a Mara safari? The Ocean Spa Lodge is a great place to wind down and feast your eyes on the Indian Ocean before heading to the airport. Opened in 2014, this pretty resort offers everything you need and more. Its 14 thatched suites are strung along quiet, white-sand Msambweni beach on Kenya's secluded south coast, just 40 minutes south of populous Diani. It's a great honeymoon destination and a safe place to holiday with your children. When you've had your fill of chilling by the pool, hop onto a boat to any of the local marine reserve islands to snorkel and explore the underwater life or, on Funzi Island, to see some of Kenya's best nesting sites for sea turtles; or go deep-sea fishing to find marlin and sailfish. If you're wanting to swim from the lodge, remember that there's quite a walk to deeper water at low tide (although the rock pools are interesting), and waves at high tide can be rough.

Main Destination: Msambweni

Accommodation: The Ocean Spa Lodge

Meals & Drinks: All meals included

All drinks (Premium wines & liquors might be excluded)
